Learn2Game: preparing you for the content of the Game2Learn course

Course value

The sessions offer educators a chance to learn more about how games can serve their needs,
along with the underlying information that will make you, the teacher,
comfortable with the inclusion of
video games in your classroom

Functional / Technical know-how

Including games means knowing how to use the systems they are found on. This session acquaints teachers with the different platforms functions of the respective systems

  • Loading games on different systems
  • How to start games
  • Save points and auto-save functions
  • Controllers and pairing

Controlling lesson and game content / Resource management

Familiarity with the hardware means you can get inside the games. We review what and how the teacher can manage both the game and learning material

  • Top down, start with multimodal theory
  • VG as a means to enhance learning
    • Finding learning outcomes from VG
    • Designing educational exercises that makes use of VG content
  • Other multimodal pieces (PPT, media, worksheets, etc)

Example session delivery – lesson experience

An important consideration is how the games can be effectively deployed in the class. This session reviews the content delivery through an example session (focus on the pedagogy of delivering sessions with mixture of ppt, videogame and worksheets)

  • Guide the teachers through a session
  • Focus on the specific points where students transition between game and worksheet and vice versa

Game2Learn Lesson building

Case study: taking a lesson from Florence, we peel it back to the consideration made regarding the structure, objectives and content of the lesson, analysing the considerations that are made along the way.
  • Constructing a learning element around Florence
  • Being shown the considerations to be made with respect to time, class size, facilities, age group, lesson length, etc
  • Develop into an exercise that could be used in the group – 3 sections of game
